Rwanda allocates land to first ever green city pilot project: official

KIGALI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has granted 620 hectares of land on the outskirts of capital Kigali to establish the country's first ever green city pilot project, an official announced on Thursday.

This project at Kinyinya hill in Gasabo district is expected to deliver a paradigm shift in green urbanization, and will involve the adoption of sustainable development principles and new policy frameworks for green building standards and electric mobility, Rwandan Minister of Environment Vincent Biruta said at a stakeholder meeting in Kigali.

The pilot project will lead the way for further scaling up of green building and green urban planning projects characterized with low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways said Biruta.

A housing development incorporating multiple green aspects with 410 houses is set to be developed in the first phase of the project, while green affordable houses will be developed on 125 hectares of land in the second phase, he said.

The last phase will include commercial and office buildings expected to attract innovative green businesses, the minister added. Enditem
