Former high-risk zone dwellers benefit from Rwf1bn model village

Residents of Kicukiro District celebrated National Heroes’ Day by launching Urumuri IDP Model village that will accommodate former high-risk zone dwellers.

The village, constructed at the cost of Rwf1 billion in Masaka Sector, will also accommodate some historically marginalised people and disabled ex-combatants.

It has a community hall, poultry projects, kitchen gardens, ECD center that has received 120 children, and a health post with an aim to improve the welfare of the beneficiaries.

“We have linked this inauguration to Heroes’ Day since these are also heroic activities to help our citizens. We are achieving all these developments through the visionary leadership and heroic values of people who liberated the country,” said Jeanne Nyirahabimana, the Mayor of Kicukiro District.

Residents praised President Paul Kagame for having led the liberation struggle.

Faustin Karekezi, an 80-year old man, said: “I have been requesting for a better home for a long time but in vain. Today, I am regaining my dignity thanks to the Government of unity and reconciliation. We thank our heroes who saved this country from a fascist regime and helped us escape from deplorable conditions,” he said.

Epimacque Habumugisha, who has been living in a one-roomed dwelling, added: “I had not ever imagined staying in such a beautiful house. We thank our government that is keen on supporting vulnerable people”.
